Dry Needling
Dry needling or myofascial trigger point dry needling is the use of acupuncture needles for relieving musculoskeletal pain, spasm and tightness.
This is done at the site of trigger points which are knots of contracted muscle, often caused by long periods of sustained low – mid level workloads in potentially poor postures i.e office work.
The needles stimulate the tissues to produce a ‘twitch’ response, which causes relaxation of the tissues and normalisation of muscle tone and function. It will also stimulate a pain relieving chemical change in the brain and an inhibition to the transmission of pain signals from the spinal cord.
Dry needling differs to traditional Chinese acupuncture as the concepts of meridians or Yin and Yang are not utilised.
Dry needling has a growing strong body of evidence and it is increasingly being used in mainstream clinics and hospitals, rather than just as an alternative therapy.
At Avalon Physiotherapy & Clinical Pilates, this technique is recommended as an optional treatment to some injuries in conjunction with other physiotherapy modalities to achieve your individual goals and get you back to your best.
