Falls Prevention and Balance Retraining
Slips, trips and falls can happen to anyone, but they are far more common with the elderly and they can have much greater consequences.
Falling is a major reason for admission to hospital for the elderly. It is easy to dismiss a fall as just being clumsy or just a part of getting older, but it could be an indication that something is not right and you should discuss any fall with your GP to find out what you can do to minimize the chance of falling again.
There are many reasons for the increased risk of falling. As we age our reflexes get slower, our eyesight worsens, the sensation throughout feet can reduce, our inner ear balance equilibrium can deteriorate, our joints get stiffer and muscles get weaker. Put all together like that, it can sound rather depressing, but there are things you can do to improve your situation and reduce the likelihood of you falling.
Coming down to Avalon Physiotherapy & Clinical Pilates is a great start. We can have a discussion and analyze why you may be falling or feeling unsteady on your feet. There may be a simple reason and solution.
Together we can devise a plan to getting your confidence back. This will involve, but is not limited to, simple strengthening, proprioception and balance exercises that you can complete in the practice with us and at home by yourself. We may also ask you to think about your environment at home and make any changes necessary, like removing trip hazards like rugs.
